  • by Ginger Cheng-chi Hsü
  • xiii,  314 pages. With about 50 black-white illustrations. Hsu investigates the production, exchange, and consumption of paintings in late-imperial China, placing the art against its historic backdrop of significant social change. She discusses the merchant patrons associated with the Yangchow school of painting and reconstructs the lives of four painters who exemplify the diversity of the school's traditions: Fang Shih-Shu, Huang Shen, Cheng Shieh, and Chin Nung

In the centuries that followed, with the fast development of science, art and literature, many books were illustrated with beautiful pictures printed from wooden blocks.
