It is only in the last ten years that Petra, the political centre and holy city of the Nabateans has come to notice. Research into the Nabatean culture is in many areas still in its earliest stages, only a tiny part of Petra has been excavated. However, there are more and more indications that this golden age spanned the first century before and after the birth of Christ. In one area the influence extends to the present time: the Nabatean language formed the root of modern Arabic script.
